Fletch Won

Posted in Life at 8:40 am by Fletcher

This is the 1st (chronologically) in the series of Fletch novels, a favorite of mine, and a powerful good luck charm. Every time I read this particular book, good things happen.

Case in point: after 2 months of struggling with it- I fixed Jonathan’s computer. One of the things that I appreciate about the man is that our brains work in such a similar manner that it is almost frightening. So it was no surprise that we exhausted every logical problem, almost lockstep in tandem, when just as the idea popped into my head, he said, “Let’s open the thing up, see if its full of dust and cat hair…’ (he has 3 of them)

Once we dusted it, I decided to check the connections, just in case… And there it was: one of the USB headers was slightly askew. Once I popped it back into place and fired it up, all of the problems mysteriously vanished into the aether…

So after multiple high-fives, hugs and expletatives, I let him get reaquainted with his old friend, namely editing video- as he explained my next project: a 15 second black and white animation done in the 50’s deco - tiki style. He then called up the pub, told them to hook a brother up and sent me there to celebrate in grand style.

When I got there, I ran into Tiffany, who had just been given a promotion, so we lauded each other, feeling good that for once things were looking like they were looking up…

Manifest Density

Posted in Uncategorized at 8:30 am by Fletcher

Only a few days left before I wing westward to San Fran. Trying not to think too much about being stuck in a plane for 8 hours, probably with a 5 year old kicking the back of my seat the entire time. I think they should make Xanax mandatory for all people boarding a flight of 2 hours or longer…

Still feeling the effects of the party Friday night, courtesy of the Three Belles of Brooklyn. I tried my best, eating, rehydrating, pacing myself, all to no avail - and pretty much spending most of Saturday in a stupor.

I did some experimenting, texture wise, and was finally able to get a custom texture map into the Half Life 2 engine, and while my toxic state did not allow for a very exuberant response, the next step in becoming an employee of THQ or Lucas Arts did happen, and its been a milestone I’ve been struggling with for a while. Once I get a few more in, and some practice with the level editor, I’ll start posting screenshots, and soon thereafter, a new blog…

If I could write a book…

Funny how things happen…

Ran into an old co-worker from the paper. And its amazing the camaraderie that can only come from late nights, toiling away at some center spread, meant to enlighten and educate the masses, when all you want to do is finish and get home to a cold one, before you have to sleep and do it all over again…

She had moved on to greener pastures, out of the city, to TN, to do fashion spreads for country music singers. Back into the city to buy clothes for her ‘clients’ back out again to the safety of the small town. Its funny how this town eats people alive.

It brings back memories- when you thought your work meant something, that what you are doing makes a difference. And how weird it is to talk to someone in recovery, while you have a beer, getting warm at the bar.

It amazes me, how immutable bonds made over long nights can fade, the memories of long nights, sweat and tears over something years ago can recede like the tide going out, only to be replenished by new sweat, new tears…

I’m home now- thinking about this, as I have dinner- a steak warmed though and some edamame, listening to Miles. I will bring you these nights, the reflections as the light fades from the sky, the stories of those who lost the battle against the city- and had to flee, like a scorned lover in the night.

My mother had a great deal of trouble with me, but I think she enjoyed it.

Mark Twain said that, and perhaps its true of all mothers. I know that my formative years were marked by a good deal of heated arguments with mine. So, on this day I’d lake to pay homage to the woman that taught me:

Sit up straight, you can’t wear white socks with that outfit, wash your neck, you are not going out looking like that, don’t lie to me - I can see right through you, you’re gonna sit there and finish your dinner, you are not going out till you clean your room, wait till your father gets home, what do you mean you ‘accidentally’ broke it?, don’t talk back to me, brush your teeth, did you do your homework?, keep up the attitude bust and I’ll ship you off to the army, bring in the groceries, get off there before you break your neck, you know how much this cost?, eat your vegetables, and, no- we are not there yet!

 I think I turned out ok…

Observations

LIFE is so much more appreciable when one has a good dinner (stuffed roast chicken with fresh green beans) and having watched a good ‘B’ move (Queen of the Damned).

Life is indeed good..

New project: In the near future I’ll be starting a new blog, centered around making assets for video games (a passion of mine) with plenty of screenshots, tutorials, and commentary about the industry.

Currently I’m working on a mod for the Doom3 engine, which you can read about here. The team is based in Germany, and had approached me when I started posting some screenshots on a bulletin board.

Sooner or later, I’ll be heading up a team for a mod idea of my own, probably using the Half-Life 2 engine (when I learn it) In the meantime, you can check out my previous work here.

My good friend Ruth from TN. just had a monster birthday-party; my sincerest regrets in not being able to attend (and considering the parties we’ve had in NYC, I’m quite certain that this one was no less fun and intense!)

We here in NYC give a big ole Rebel Yell to our good friends South O’ the Mason Dixon.

Check out her blog here.
