I had the pleasure of getting an invite to a gallery opening from old friend and former roomie Jarrett. I haven’t seen the guy since we did a show at Ruby Falls and I have a few of his paintings that I wanted to return before I move.
The venue was at Teneleven, a funky art-bar down on Avenue C. I braved bitter cold winds and frostbite to see what new eclectic jazz inspired pieces that man had to display.
I was shocked when I saw his latest stuff.
He has totally eschewed the urban abstractifications of the past and has adopted a Asian influenced study in nature. It was as if he had done a 180 on theme, yet has improved in his technique. Normally the work he’s done in the past has been somber and thought provoking, this latest offering seems almost transcendental, as if the artist himself had found a Confucian state of bliss.
If you find yourself in the East Village, stop in for a drink and some art, the calmative effects of both will shift your perspective for a bit…
Teneleven. - 171 Ave. C, appropriately between 10th and 11th Sts.

Well, I think with a few final tweaks here and there, it’ll be done - my folks placed in IN.
I may get some commentary about the water (which I’ve never been all that good at painting) but generally I think its done and ready to pass along to the parental units.

Or: We’re outta da’ closet.
Its official, my girl finally told her people about us - that I am moving and all that jazz.
For those who didn’t know - Cheryl is her name, and she has appeared on these pages as ‘Shannon the Baker’ and she is without a doubt the love of my life and I am moving soon to be with her.
I may be a bit sporadic in the posts - but rest assured that we are indeed open and art, film and snarky commentary will continue…

So, I get an email from The Director, asking for votes to get a short he acted in to play on PBS.
The fun part, is that he plays a bartender.
Since I’ve known the man, he’s always had the bar biz as a ‘day job’ and is damn good at it, personable, funny, quick and a real pro - plus he’s a good looking guy, so the ladies obviously flock to him when he lays on the charm.
But, as we’ve become friends, I’ve also gotten to know him as an actor, his methodology - how he translates what is in a script to what is captured on film and the thought processes behind it.
Granted; I’ve seen him more behind the bar than in front of the camera, but mostly that is due to not having a TV and a passion for the barley and hops products that is legendary… BUT to see him acting as a bartender; well my friends - that is indeed a special treat…
Got to the site and watch “Thirsty”

Sometimes, words are unneeded.
Here is the latest on the last of the ‘Shannon at the Window’ series.

The last of the ‘Shannon at the Window’ series.
I’ve decided to play around and experiment with this one. I want to get back to the black and white series for a while and this one seems appropriate. I started off using acrylic as the underpainting - its quick and easy, and mistakes can be covered up rapidly.
I went back into it with a Derwent Drawing pencil, which is more like conte’ - and it dissolves in turpentine, which adds some neat effects to the first layer of oils I’m putting down…

I normally carry my camera around the city, just in case I get a celeb sighting or news event worth selling to the papers. (hey, you never know!) But usually I jut get neat, quirky bits that one never expects out of the city.
My lament is that on the corner of 5th and 41st, right by the NY Public Library someone had painted a bike a vibrant flourescent orange and chained it to a street sign. It seemed like an act of protest - the orange made me think of Guantanamo prisoners - but there was no sign, no description.
Hell, it could have been a piece of street art or a couple of stoned and bored teenagers with too much time on their hands…
I kept meaning to bring my camera and shoot it.
Well, a bit of the ol’ ‘too little too late’. - It was still there yesterday, but some one had started to disassemble it. And it loses some of the effect. I think.
It now looks like someone’s old and decrepit street art.
Never again.

One can never have too many brick textures, some are orangy-red, some are almost purple in color, some look great because they’re old and crumbly, while others are crisp and clean.
This one comes from a Persian rug shop over on Madison, they look artificial, as most of the local bricks are more ruddy, and have colored striations in them. Some of the local storefronts will do faux brick by slapping up colored stucco and routing out mortar lines…
As always, you know what to do…
