Since returning to work, I easily re-adapted back into the corporate office environment by dint of my usual methods of taking naps and throwing my coffee mug at the face of anyone daring to ask me to ‘work’.
Ah corporate life - as long as you make sure your behavior is so outrageous, you be fine. A quick nod to Hunter Thompson, who taught me that. ‘The only hope now, I felt, was the possibility that we’d gone to such excess, with our gig, that nobody in a position to bring the hammer down on us could possibly believe it . . . When you bring an act into this town, you want to bring it in heavy. ‘
I was in the lunch room, nuking up a dish o’ lambchops & garlic roasted potatos (nothing crushes co-worker spirits more, when they smell good, home cooked food and then look down at their overprocessed sandwich from Subway) and as I was waiting for the little ‘ding’, I looked at the newspapers collecting on the communal table. What caught my eye was a slap to the head.
I espied a “Living” section, the part of the paper devoted to the new things that people can do ther than sitting on their collective hindquarters watching TV, and the headlining story was what caused me to pause.
It was not the newest exhibit at the museum.
It was not the latest trendy club opening.
It was not the ‘now that spring is here, where to go’ fluff piece.
Heck, it wasn’t even the touting of a local sports rivalry.
It was an article comparing the merits of different kinds of mulch.
Yes. I will repeat that: It was an article comparing the merits of different kinds of mulch.
Wow, I thought, I have landed in a different world. My mind instantly flashed to a quote from Smokey & the Bandit:
Bandit: What do you think they do for excitement in this town?
Cledus Snow: Probably sit around and watch the cars rust.
I thought ill of myself for doing so - I should be the one making the difference, I should be the one adding to my environment, to make it better for all…
So I went and took a nap under my bosses desk. And threw my mug at him for having the temerity to wake me up…

It has been a bit since I’ve done one of these, so it is time to make up for that - this week’s offering is something that could have originated in the Half Life 2 universe. To me it looks like the metal panels that permeate the Combine technology…
It’s actually a patina-ed side from a Zen-Palate restaurant on Union Square, redone to be a bit more blue and made tileable…

For the longest time, I’ve been trying to get my own texture maps to work in the Source Engine - the one that powers Portal, Half Life 2, Team Fortress 2, etc.
I’ve managed to get my own maps into the Doom3 engine with little problem, but - D3 seems more suited to plastic and metal, while Source seems, I dunno, more organic. I think that part of it is that Source does the most realistic water I’ve ever seen in a game, and also does the best physics as well.
The trick now is to work out all the bits and pieces that I wanna do - because I’ve got a potential moneymaker idea - I just have to implement it, test it and then try selling it. BUT, I also have a kick butt TF2 map idea, one that centers around the large Hadron Collider at Cern, so if there are any mod-makers out there interested, give me a shout.

This next painting was a bit… of an experiment.
Instead of the usual priming (which is brushing on gesso & sanding it sorta smooth) I had used a palette knife to coat the board - I love painting on wood panel - to the point is was as smooth as glass.
The surface didn’t take paint like I expected it to. I started beading up instead of adhering like it does to canvas. Interesting. It wasn’t until the 3rd or 4th layer of color that it started to take. And then wow.
To me, this ‘looks’ like a painting - sometimes I fake it well, but this has the feel that I want. I can only equate it to when I took trumpet lessons waaaay back in the 5th grade and the first time I was practicing a song and it sounded like a trumpet and not a goose with asthma - that ‘Aha!’ moment when it all starts to gel.
I’m curious to see what happens next with it.
